Cryptonemia Crenulata (Red Macroalgae)
Cryptonemia crenulata is a slow-growing, deep red marine macroalgae belonging to the family Halymeniaceae. It is prized in the marine aquarium hobby for its vibrant color, unique growth habits, and utility in nutrient export.
Features thick, flattened, wavy fronds in a bright red to deep burgundy or pink shade.
Grows initially from a holdfast into dense, bush-like shapes. New leaflets can sprout directly from the surfaces of larger existing leaves, and small "baby" algae can form on the leaves that are capable of detaching and re-anchoring.
Palatability - Unpalatable to most herbivorous fish and critters (not guaranteed), non-invasive/slow-growing, and acts as a natural filter by absorbing excess nitrates, phosphates, and carbon dioxide while providing microfauna habitat (like copepods and amphipods).
This macroalgae can attach itself to rocks, substrate, or other surfaces if water flow allows it to settle.
Lighting - Thrives under moderate-to-strong, full-spectrum lighting that highlights its red-orange coloration.
Flow - Moderate to high water movement helps prevent detritus from settling on its branches.
It has a dense structure which offers great hiding space for beneficial hitchhikers like copepods and rotifers.
You will receive a small cutting of this macroalgae similar in size to that in the photo with the 50 pence piece being for scale.
Dispatch days are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday only, as this will be sent via Royal Mail Tracked 24, any orders placed on or after a Thursday, will be dispatched the following Monday.
Macroalgae should be acclimatised in the same way as you would with fish and corals.
